A KAFFEEKLATSCH is a gathering of people over KAFFEE (coffee) to exchange the latest KLATSCH (gossip). The German word KLATSCH originated from people gathering in the olden days to do laundry and to talk about, well, everything. KLATSCH! is the sound wet bed sheets make when slapped against stone to rinse them—a sound that radiates outward, just like gossip. KLATSCHEN is a subversive form of speaking that is both private and public. It’s not about monologues. Everybody is welcome to join the chatter.
