We are delighted to announce the solo exhibition of Wing/nets at Oksang Factory in Seoul.

Drawing on scientific research into dragonfly physiology, the Wing/net sculptures multimedia hexagonal relief sculptures provide windows onto the sensitive bodies of dragonflies, and their unique forms of perception. Combined with fragmented imagery of dragonfly habitats around the globe, the Wing/nets delicately foster empathy for those creatures whose homes are made uninhabitable by the consequences of human activities.

Wing/nets elaborates the non-human perspective of dragonflies encountering anthropogenic changes to their habitats. The Earth and each ecosystem that creates liveable habitats upon it, is a complex and coevolved synthesis of mineral and biological entities. Humans shape the landscape on a local scale and on a global scale that it’s impossible to perceive on the scale of one body. Using sculpture, sound and photography, the exhibition evokes the partial nature of the picture that both humans and dragonflies possess of the impact of each of their actions on the environment. The Wing/nets exhibition levels the implicit hierarchy in applying the human gaze to environmental issues, giving weight and importance and agency to the gaze of the dragonfly in a time of ecological crisis.

Wing/nets is part of Austen’s ongoing exploration into dragonfly habitats, The Global Compact on Dragonfly Migration.
